Some verse inspired by the parallels between the Roman and American attempts to control the Middle East. The Romans under Emperor Vespasian and his son, Titus ; the Americans under George H Bush and his son George W.

When Rome had the power to rule all mankind
A kind of a treaty was duly enshrined
No attack on your land would ever be made
If you helped Rome get rich through mutual trade.

But if you bred elephants to launch an attack
The Romans would swiftly and strongly strike back
The power of the Romans you would then taste
As your cities and towns were soon laid to waste.

But people in all of the Middle Eastern lands
Gathered together in small fighting bands
The single aim that they hoped to achieve
Was to force all of the foreign armies to leave.

But how could simple folk ever hope to fight
An enemy backed by Rome’s awful might?
But the Iscarii brought terror by one and by two
By suddenly stabbing both Roman and Jew.

The Romans grew tired of this bloody tussle.
And decided it was time for flexing their muscle
Emperor Vepasian launched an attack
And the Judean rebels quickly fell back.

When their leaders took refuge in their capital city
Vespasian decided to show them some pity.
He pulled back his armies to patiently wait
For the inevitable collapse of the Judean state.

But when Vespasian’s son came to rule the day
He decided to end matters in his own ruthless way.
He sent a great army to control all the land
And destroy each and every terrorist band.

The Judean state was easily destroyed
By the overwhelming power that the Romans employed
But the Roman Empire is now centuries gone
Yet Judaism somehow is still living on.

……..

Now America has the power to rule all of mankind
And a kind of a treaty has been enshrined
No attack on your land will ever be made
If you help America get rich through mutual trade.

But if you make weapons to launch an attack
The Americans will swiftly and strongly strike back
The power of America you will then taste
As your cities and towns will be laid to waste.

But people in all of the Middle Eastern lands
Have gathered have together in small fighting bands
The single aim that they hope to achieve
Is to force all of the foreign armies to leave.

But how could simple folk ever hope to fight
An enemy backed by America’s awful might?
But Al Queda brought terror by one and by two
By suddenly bombing both Christian and Jew.

The Americans grew tired of this bloody tussle.
And decided it was time for flexing their muscle
When President Bush launched an attack
The Iraqi armies quickly fell back.

When their leaders took refuge in their capital city
The President decided to show them some pity.
He pulled back his armies to patiently wait
For the inevitable collapse of the Iraqi state.

But when Bush’s son came to rule the day
He decided to end matters in his own ruthless way.
He sent a great army to control all the land
And destroy each and every terrorist band.

The Iraqi state was easily destroyed
By the overwhelming power the Americans employed.
