A sonnet is a type of verse
Designed to make a poet curse;
Fourteen lines that strictly rhyme
And scan alike all of the time.
It calls for words like o’er and e’en
With thy and thee used in between.
And then some words to rhyme with “love”,
Like “up above” and “turtle-dove”.
And just to show some classic learnin’,
You ought to throw a Grecian urn in.
In Shakespeare’s day it was the rage
To write a sonnet on every page;
But modern taste is not so sweet
And the sonnet form is obsolete.
